Yantalo Peru Foundation Agreement
On June 28, 2012, a formal affiliation agreement between the UIC Center for Global Health and the Yantalo Peru Foundation was signed by CGH Director Dr. Timothy Erickson and Dr. Luis Vasquez, Founder and President of the Yantalo Peru Foundation. The ceremony took place at the clinic site in Peru, and was witnessed by the local workers and by CGH representatives Dr. Valerie Dobiesz, Dr. Marcia Edison, and Ms. Rhea Begeman. Dr. Vasquez accompanied the team from the CGH on site visits to hospitals and clinics in and around Moyobamba and Tarapoto, and was a most gracious host. The formal affiliation paves the way for future clinical, educational, and research opportunities for UIC medical students, residents, and faculty.
In the fall of 2012, two Memoranda of Understanding (MOU) were effectuated between UIC and The Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology School of Medical Science and the Komfo Anyoke Teaching Hospital (KATH), both in Kumasi, Ghana for the following purposes: (1) Exchange of faculty members, students, and academic materials; (2) Joint research activities; and (3) Joint educational programs. The collaboration with KNUST is particularly with its School of Medical Sciences. Initial collaborations will be developed between the departments of pathology of these institutions in Kumasi and the Department of Pathology at UIC, and there are plans for future development of collaborations in dentistry and nursing with KATH.
Anyone who is interested in exploring collaborations in these three areas is encouraged to contact Dr. Maarten C. Bosland (firstname.lastname@example.org; 5-3724) in the Department of Pathology.
MS Ramaiah Medical college Agreement
In August of 2012, a delegation from the Center was invited to visit the MS Ramaiah Medical College in Bangalore, India. Tim Erickson, Bellur Prahakar, Ai-Xuan and Mark Holterman, Marcia Edison, and Rhea Begeman made presentations to faculty, acted as observers in a “Disaster Drill,” toured the Institute of Ayurveda and Integrative Medicine (I-AIM), and signed an affiliation agreement which should lead to collaborations in education and research between our institutions.
Vietnam MOU Signings
In September 2012, Valerie Dobiesz & Tim Erickson traveled to Vietnam with two inspirational Pediatric Surgical colleagues, Dr. Ai Xuan Holterman and Dr. Mark Holterman from the University of Illinois COM Peoria campus and their NGO, IPSAC (International Pediatric Specialists Alliance for the Children of Vietnam). It was a very productive trip with signing of MOU’s (Memorandum of Understanding) with hospitals and medical centers in Ho Chi Minh City, Hue, Da Nang, and Hanoi.
The UI team gave several educational presentations and met with the country’s Minister of Health who has a great vision and future plans to improve the health care system in Vietnam through educational and research exchanges.
The group returned in March of 2013 and September of 2013 to assist with pediatric patient care and team teach Advance Pediatric Life Support (APLS) and Advanced Trauma Life Support (ATLS) courses with the Vietnamese faculty.
