Building Research Capacity in Ukraine in Environmental and Occupational Health
- The Family and Children of Ukraine Study (FCOU)
- The Global Environmental and Occupational Health Research Hub (GEOHub) planning grant.
FCOU is a longitudinal birth cohort study that follows pregnant women and their children from pregnancy through the child’s reaching 18 years of age.
With funding from the NIH Fogarty International Center, we are planning for the development of a regional research hub, GEOHub, based in Kyiv, Ukraine that would focus on “Energy Security and Health.” GEOHub is a collaborative effort between UIC School of Public Health and College of Medicine and Ukraine’s Institutes of Occupational Medicine, Pediatrics, and Environmental Hygiene. GEOHub will also include occupational and environmental institutes from Belarus, Bulgaria, and Serbia.
We maintain the “UIC Louise Hamilton Data Management Center” in Kyiv to support and manage our in-country studies. For the past 15 years, we have been supported by an NIH Fogarty grant for “International Training and Research in Environmental and Occupational Health” and by a U.S. National Cancer Institute contract for “Data Management for the bi-national U.S. – Ukraine study of thyroid cancer in children following the Chernobyl Reactor Accident.
