Dr. Luis Vasquez, a retired cardiologist in the United States, returned to his mother’s community in Yantalo to provide the healthcare supplies and services that the community needed.
Yantalo is a village located in the Peruvian Amazon in the province of Alto Mayo with a population of approximately 4000. Since 2005, Dr. Vasquez has been recruiting volunteer healthcare professionals and fundraising to create a sustainable hub of clinical care, health education and research. The UIC Center for Global Health works with Dr. Vasquez, who heads the Yantalo Peru Foundation to provide faculty exchanges, resident/ student exchanges and joint educational and research projects.
The result of his efforts has culminated in the construction of the Adelina Soplin Yantalo Clinic and Diagnostic Center. The hospital will have 16 patient rooms, 10 outpatient rooms, three digital X-ray units, a fully equipped laboratory, cafeteria and community meeting rooms.
The UIC Center for Global Health hopes to work with the Yantalo Peru Foundation to create a long-term and sustainable positive impact through active participation of the community and volunteers.
